Master Bathroom (the plans)

I promised floorplans and how we minimally reworked the existing layout to create a master suite. Here's what was most likely originally there, when the house was built... this is more or less what have determined after gutting down to the studs.

Original Layout: I get the feeling that the toilet was in its own closet. That the clawfoot tub was in its own room with a sink or two? All our bedrooms have old plumbing lines from sinks in each closet.

As Purchased: When we purchased the house we had two bathrooms squeezed together. The "pink bath" was tight and not very useful. The toilet was tight to the sink, and the bathtub turned out to be a clawfoot, which explains why it felt high/ tall in the space. There was no mirror in this bathroom, either - Just a blank patch on the wall from where it was taken before we moved in. The "pass thru" space had no lighting, no electrical and acted as a private entry to the sunporch. In pictures from the former occupants, the sunporch was a rented bedroom! It has no heat!! Did the mention that the pass thru walls were not even screwed down? You could push on the wall that adjoined the pink bath and it would "wow".

Current: You can see how we left the plumbing for both the toilets and shower in place, and incorporated the pass through as part of the Master Bathroom. The sunporch, in turn, turned into our own private suite. Right now we have misc. furniture out there acting as a mini office. We use a space heater to keep warm in the winter. The vision involves some book cases and a built-in desk, a place to make coffee in the mornings and a comfy chair for weekends.

The Master Bath (Before & After)

I have realized that I have shared the Master Bedroom, but haven't shared the Master Bath. It was a strange set-up and bathroom that existed before we purchased the home. We new from our first walk through that this would be turned into a private Master Bathroom, and it was only a matter of time.
Turns out the Tub is a clawfoot that got enclosed!
As you can see, having a big window behind the toilet, and having another window off the bathtub are two great things in regards to privacy (sarcasm)... and the color choices were less than awesome. Tile, too. For reference, the shower is in the same location as the bathtub, and toilet didn't change locations.

I'll post some floorplans of what we had to work with, and what we found in another post.

For now, some finished photos...

The marble floor was a splurge that we found at a tile store that accidentally received a shipment that they don't normally sell. Talk about timing, we took it off their hands for a VERY good price. The Marble in the Shower I got from a countertop store - it was scraps from someone's Kitchen Project. Price? Free. They even cut it to the right sizes. The subway tile and woodwork were picked up at local tile and woodworking stores. Bathroom Fixtures are all Kohler and I ordered them through a plumber friend - half price baby! Mirror we found at Ikea is the As-Is Section. Vanity Lights we picked up in the sale bin at Rejuvenation. We were lucky they had two matching. Another score. All in All, for a complete gut job... we did well and finished with the huge help of my cousin, David.

flashbacks

Joe and I have just a few finishing touches on the Master Suite before we take a BIG {financial} BREAK on things... for me to part with all the work (my eyes see so many more projects to do!) I am the type that has to justify it. I started looking back on our journey over the past two years and thought I would share some of the befores/ durings to inspire anyone who is also in the midst of a big project.

Whenever I get overwhelmed with the state of affairs or frustrated with progress (I work on a jobsite so I easily forget that DIY at home is much slower and different than building big things at work). I also find it interesting how I so easily block things from my mind, it's too easy to block out the "befores" and lost focus on the progress.

What were we thinking!?

wall repair in the dining room

poorly installed old windows that had major gaps
(it's built in ventilation, right?)

our temporary kitchen that froze in the winter ice storms...

and how could i forget the pink, mauve bathroom
with the gurgling sink (not properly vented) and
toilet waste line held together by duct tape (disgusting!)

Master Bed/ Bath Progress

We spend all our time working and no time blogging...

Labor Day weekend marks the 1 year anniversary of when we started to demo the Upstairs back bedroom and pink bathroom to create an updated Master Suite - complete with electricity!
Here's our progress and hopefully next weekend we'll be moving furniture in!

The bedroom is awaiting paint touch up and cleaning of the floors, Sunporch is ready to prep for paint and the bathroom is waiting for fixtures to arrive as well as the glass door.
the upper private sunporch (Future Office) is now cleared for paint prepping and paint,
as well as home to our 400 lb claw foot that is too heavy to move easily.

the shower just needs the frameless door to be installed,
i am in love with the marble.

And then, there was light

Don't worry, this light is only a placeholder

It's a big day. The circuits have been landed and all systems are a go - the Master Suite has working power and lights. This is the first time ever, for that part of the house since we've moved in! Our alarm clock will no longer be powered by extension cord...

Master Bath Progress

David is kicking B-U-T-T when it comes to the carpentry and trimwork. We help were we can. Next will be installing the flooring and waterproofing/ tiling the shower. The waterproofing kit we ordered came with some missing pieces... so we're trying to make progress while we wait for the loose ends.
